It was a Sunday, the seventh day of my crazy long work week.
I had to get more project work done and stomped down the stairs to my terrace level office, frustrated at sacrificing another weekend to my business.
I knew there had to be a better way, I was juggling 40 clients with one full time assistant and an intern, it was too much.
Not knowing what I was looking for, I yanked open my client file drawer and scooped up all the files and put them on my conference table.
Then I stared at them all for a few minutes before I started sorting them into two piles. Clients I loved and clients I didn't so much.
And I noticed something SHOCKING...
The 80/20 rule, Pareto's Principle, was hard at work in my business (and I bet it is in yours too) 80% of my revenues were coming from 20% of my clients.
In this case, that was just 8 of my clients, all my favorites, easy to work with, trusted me totally, invested generously, and I even socialized with them. They were fun!
Their projects were small, there were loads of questions, less trust, more DIY, and even some nickel and diming. Nice folks, but not my ideals.
So I made a commitment to myself on that Sunday, 20 years ago, that I'd wrap up the small ones and focus on the large ones and target my marketing only on my ideals.
When I looked at those 8 clients, they all had a lot in common with each other and with me. I had an ideal client staring at me and had looked right past them.
