Melissa's Got a Goody Here for You ...

, have you ever been so sick you just wanted to die?

You know that place where you ache from head to toe and can't even crawl out of bed.

I've never had a 4 hour doctor visit that included two IV drips, UGH.

This is the first day I've been able to sit up and check email and voicemail.

Melissa's Method: Don't Answer "How Much Is It?"; Ask, "What's It Worth?"

From time to time, I'll receive an email from a connection on LinkedIn or Facebook, that says "I'd like to coach with you. How much is it?" This isn't a question I answer, nor should you, for three reasons:

1) I don't know enough about the individual asking, at this point, to know if we are a good fit.

(You wouldn't either, so don't give your rate, until you know they are someone you want to work with. You have a choice.)

2) The clients I work with know I am the one for them, and they don't let price stand in the way of their progress.

(Think back to a time when you found the right coach, consultant, or counselor at a price that was beyond what you'd planned, you still made it happen when it was important enough to you. If it wasn't important enough you didn't. Your ideal clients are convinced of the value you bring, those who aren't, aren't your ideal clients.)

3) Coaching and consulting results aren't based on price, they are based on what you do with what you are told.

(You could pay someone $25K for the year and do nothing with the strategies, guidance, and support they provide and get no results. You could play someone else $10K for the year and follow everything they provide and completely turn your business around. It isn't about what you paid, it's about the action you took, the same applies for your clients.)

Instead of answering, I invite the individual into a conference call. And in order to make that happen, they have to complete my intake. It's a "barrier to entry" that if not completed, indicates they aren't serious about moving forward and not worth time in my schedule.

(What's your "barrier to entry" to prequalify potential clients in your service based business? As a designer I created a seven page lifestyle questionnaire, this works in every service based business; I guarantee it.)

I like to work with business owners who are fired up about growing their business. Sure they are scared, feeling unsure, and they want the growth and are committed to doing whatever it takes to get there. (Did I just describe you?) They know that by growing their business, they'll have a bigger impact, greater satisfaction, and make more money.
