As I sit writing this, it
is gray, cold, and damp out.
I spent much of today in the car, in heavy rain, driving back and forth to Highlands, NC for my missing cat.
I want to watch a movie, call a friend, or focus on missing Twiggy.
(She is still in Highlands, too wet to hunt for her today. Keep those positive thoughts and prayers coming, please.)
I'm in a wee bit of a DIP.
I'm in that place of resistance and frustration where it is easier to throw my
hands up, or put my face in my hands than it is to do what needs to be done.
So, I'm doing what needs to be done ANYWAY by writing you this email.
In business, there is a rhythm and a schedule to be maintained.
When DIPS HAPPEN, and they do to everyone, you can choose to stay in the DIP or you can PULL YOURSELF OUT OF THE DIP.
That second option isn't easy or even fun, IT IS NECESSARY.
DIPS can last a few minutes, a few hours,
a few days, or weeks and months, even years.
They can happen without warning, be triggered by an event or result, or you can see them looming in the distance like the BIG BAD ICEBERGS OF RESISTANCE THEY ARE.
What do you do when you hit a DIP?
Do you hide?
Do you wallow?
Do you throw your hands up or cover your face with your hands?
Do you give up?
OR, do you keep going?
Do you make the
decision to triumph over the resistance and push beyond the dip because you know that someplace on the other side of the DAMN DIP is smooth sailing, great results, golden clients, and everything you want?
C'mon, hit the reply here and let me know.
You'll feel better if you are in a DIP talking about it with me, and if you aren't you'll likely stave off a DIP by talking about how you will tackle it.
DIPS are part of life, part of business, and inherent in
any creative endeavor.
DIPS make the HIGHS even HIGHER, but wow, can they make those lows feel like the bottom.
The cool thing is that as often as you push through a DIP, you lessen your resistance so that the next DIP is not as low or as long.
There are two awesome books (and insanely fast reads) that will help you deal with THE DIP:
Proof that DIPS happen to everyone especially those at the top because they went through all those DIPS to get there.
Remember, reply to this email with what you do when you are in the DIP.
Mega Hugs,
Melissa
PS. DIPS come in all sizes and shapes, today's was little I've had massive DIPS that it took a crane of helpful mentors and colleagues to lift
me out of. DIPS are DIPS no matter how large or small and they all have to be gotten through (even if the decision is not to get through it a la Seth Godin and permission to quit.)
