One of the first things I do after I've met another professional at an event or online is google (yes it is a verb) them.

I'm actively looking to see where and how they show up across the internet.

If they have no presence at all, I'm actually alarmed. (You have to work hard to be invisible these days.)

The only people I know who do not have a presence online are either not in business or they are in very security conscious businesses that keep them offline (I've a friend who is a high net worth investment advisor for corporations, he is nowhere online because of the sensitive nature of his work.)

Alternatively I also see a fair amount of very weak profiles on just one or two networks with no clear, consistent branded presence. This tends to leave me scratching my head and wondering if this individual is actually credible and can be trusted in business.

What your potential clients want to verify is your credibility. Are you the real deal?

What your potential clients are looking for is a strong branded presence; they want it to be consistent across multiple platforms and complete.

(Have you seen some of those incomplete profiles on LinkedIn or Facebook with no picture, no recent activity, and no depth of detail?)

If you don't exist online or don't have a well branded presence you are doing real damage to your credibility.

Even if you don't have a website, you can have well branded social media profiles that give you credibility.
