what would you do...

This week I had a meeting with the publisher of a home design magazine.

They like my writing and want me to write articles 6x a year on decorating tips and more.

I love to write and I've done a lot of this type of content in the past.

I taught classes to consumers at Evening at Emory for a decade.

This is no brainer easy for me. BUT... is it strategic.

You see, this particular publication focuses mostly on remodels, fixer uppers, and DIY consumers. That's NOT my market for the upscale, selective design projects I take on (about 4 a year because coaching, training and consulting is the lion's share!)

And if I write for this publication is that going to knock me out of contributing to several other better fit publications locally or nationally?

While in the meeting, it seemed stupid easy, once I had an hour or so to think about it, my STRATEGIC side kicked in.

Fortunately, I have access to a couple of editors of other design publications and will seek their advice.

The question for you is, are you doing things that are EASY or STRATEGIC??

Just because you can, doesn't mean you should.

And what's much tougher is being really good at something, loving doing it, and being given an opportunity but it's not a best fit, so therefore NOT strategic.

I haven't made up my mind, but I'm really happy that I'm giving it this much thought.

As a recovering people pleaser, it's often easier to say YES but then later I realize what I'm doing isn't serving me, even if it's easy and fun (like writing is.)

So, is this a WAKE UP CALL for you?

Is there something you've been investing time and talent in that isn't yielding results?

It might be because it's easy and not strategic.

Years ago one of my mentors said "I only invest my time and talent where it will do the most good."

The most good means for YOU and THEM, if it's all them, then it's not the most good.

Take care of your future by being strategic.

Mega Hugs,
Melissa
