protect your profit & practice with this...

Some years ago, during a slow period (yes, I've had them too), I did something really stupid.

I took on a really small project (sit tight, that's not the stupid part) and in doing so I FORGOT to use my letter of agreement.

The crazy part is that I'd added to my letter of agreement (aka contract) over the years to protect my business from crazy clients, difficult clients, and clients that wanted far more than was agreed upon.

I had a rock solid letter of agreement and never had any issues.

But, when I failed to use it, because the project was so small, I totally regretted it.

This was just a 3 week commitment, but before I knew it, I was worried if I'd get paid the balance (I had nothing in writing beyond my original invoice stating full amount and when balance was due, no signature.)

The client started adding things to the scope of the project and I had nothing in writing clearly delineating what we'd discussed originally, so no way to add dollars for additional services.

I couldn't believe I'd done this to myself and my business. I was smarter than this (evidently not.)

While ultimately I did get paid, I'd had to provide extra services on a fixed fee project because I didn't use my letter of agreement (which always includes project scope and fees.)

And it reminded me that many times designers I speak with are taking small and large jobs without the protection of a letter of agreement.
