A friend and I had enjoyed the holiday tradition of seeing a theatre of production The Santaland Diaries. It had ended early so we took a walk and found a quaint bar for a nightcap. Our waitress was very prompt and friendly. I noticed an accent, so I asked where she was from.
She said South Africa by way of the Middle East. Her father had been an engineer and had moved the family across the world a couple of times to keep up with promotions. She'd majored in early childhood education, but found that wasn't her sweet spot, so she was going back for her master's degree so she could teach high school.
She had impressed us both with her focus and friendliness. Clearly she was very flexible and adaptable having lived so many places and always landed on her feet.
As the evening wore on, we decided to indulge in late night munchies and ordered wings. Our waitress delivered them, then asked if we'd mind if she clocked out and handed us off to another staffer. She needed to head home to pick up her dog and head to her mother's place since her own place had a nasty plumbing issue that had sewage backing up into the bathtub and toilets.
Most people, I know, would have been consumed with that issue and probably have called in sick to work to get it taken care of. This was a Friday night and she wasn't going to be able to get it taken care of until Monday. Yet, her sunny disposition never flagged and she simply rolled with the punches.
It really was a treat to meet someone who viewed life not as a glass half-full, but as overflowing with opportunity. Life is the opportunity you make of it, let go of glasses half-full or empty, and imagine yours overflowing.
