Often the first thing we notice about someone we meet is the differences between us. Then we begin to unconsciously judge and categorize those differences. The differences are what make life interesting and they can also be what keep us apart and prevent us from being open to learning from one another.
Years ago I was a member of a mastermind, I had more experience in business than most of the other members and I was quick to dismiss their contributions because of this. I focused on the differences in our levels of experience and professional accomplishment instead of listening to and embracing the wisdom they could bring because of their unique viewpoint and histories.
It was interesting to say the least, when just a few short years later a couple of these people had shot to the top of their industries and were in a position to form professional marketing partnerships with me, but I had not stayed in touch and had dropped out of the mastermind early on, all because I focused on the differences. It was an expensive lesson financially, spiritually, and emotionally.
Embrace the differences and refocus on the similarities. Start with the similarity that we are all human beings. Look for the gifts that each individual brings regardless of the package they come in.
