The BBC reported on a recent story of three German citizens fined in court for public negligence and dereliction of care. An 83 year old man had collapsed on the floor in front of an ATM station and these three individuals had deliberately ignored his plight and stepped over him to use the machine.
They didn't check to see if he needed help. They didn't contact the authorities to report a person in distress (he was unconscious.) They simply pretended he wasn't there and went on about their business. The old man was eventually picked up and put in hospital and later died, largely because of lack of attention to his condition.
When it was brought to the public by way of the CCTV footage and news story, there was a public outrage and fines ranged from $2500 - $3500.
This isn't dissimilar from the shocking research done on a rape attack in a high rise area of a major city. The victim's cries were heard but no one stepped up, they simply ignored it. The only way to get help was to call out "FIRE" instead of merely "help."
Look closely at your business and your life, where are you stepping over someone who needs help because you either don't see it or don't want to deal with it? We are all guilty of this in a thousand small ways over the course of a lifetime. Where can you apply a greater degree of care and compassion? Do it.
